Day Trip: Underground Railroad Tour

Journey down to Ottawa, IL as we explore the rich history of the underground railroad during the “History Machine” tour. Learn about the remarkable journey through Ottawa to Canada and how the I & M Canal was used for transporting enslaved persons on this dangerous journey. Additionally, you will learn about the Fugitive Slave Law Federal Court Case of John Hossack and James and Joseph Stour. You will have time to shop in Ottawa and have lunch on your own before we head back. Moderate walking involved with this trip. Registration deadline: April 10 (spaces permitting). Transportation provided via Park District van.
Registration for this program/event begins at 9:00am on 12/7 for residents and 12/14 for non-residents.
Trip Policies & Cancellations
Suggested Ages for Trips
Adult/Active trips are appropriate for anyone ages 18 and over.
Mature Adult trips are most appropriate for ages 55 and up, but all adults are welcome.
Pick-up/Drop-off Times
Pick-up/drop-off location is at the Park District Fitness and Recreation Center – lobby unless otherwise noted. Departure times are set and abided by. If changes occur, participants will be notified by phone. Return times may vary depending on traffic or weather conditions; we make every attempt to return by the designated time.
Refunds
Refunds are only given under the following conditions:
1: The trip is cancelled by the Barrington Park District.
2: The person asking for a refund finds a replacement for the trip.
3: The Park District has a waiting list and is able to sell your ticket.
If we have not met our registration minimum by the deadline date (if one is listed), then the trip will be cancelled and a full refund will be issued. All payments are required in full at time of registration. Please notify the Park District in advance if any special ADA or dietary accommodations are needed for the trip.
